HEALTH FACTS

Virgin Coconut Oil is composed of more than 50% Lauric Acid, that is converted in the body to Monolaurin. Monolaurin is an anti-microbial agent that protects the immune system from a range of infectious agents. Monolaurin is found naturally in high concentrations only in breast milk and Virgin Coconut Oil.  Lauric acid was originally discovered when microbiologists studied human breast milk to determine the antiviral substances which protected infants from microbial infections. It has been shown to protect newborns, whose immune systems are underdeveloped, from respiratory tract viruses. Monolaurin works by destroying lipid-coated viruses such as herpes, cytomegalovirus, influenza (and also includes the AIDS virus), and various pathogenic bacteria and protozoa. Monolaurin works by binding to the lipid-protein envelope of the virus, thereby preventing it from attaching and entering host cells, making infection and replication impossible.  Other studies show that Monolaurin disintegrates the viral envelope, killing the virus. In general, Monolaurin can help treat colds, flu, EBV, shingles, herpes, and chronic fatigue syndrome.

In studies performed at the Respiratory Virology Branch, Centers for Disease Control, Atlanta, Georgia, Monolaurin was found effective against 14 human RNA and DNA enveloped viruses in cell cultures. These included influenza, RSV, Rubeola, Newcastle's, Coronavirus, Herpes Simplex types 1 & 2, Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) and cytomegalovirus.  Monolaurin removed all measurable infectivity by disintegrating the virus envelope.  In addition to its antiviral effects, monolaurin has also been shown to have antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus agalactiae, Groups A, F & G streptococci, Chlamydia, H. pylori, and against yeast and fungi as well, including Candida and ringworm.

Hierholzer and Kabara (1982) first reported the antiviral activity of the monoglyceride of lauric acid (monolaurin) on viruses that affect humans. They showed virucidal effects of monolaurin on enveloped RNA and DNA viruses. This work was done at the Center for Disease Control of the U.S. Public Health Service. This study was carried out using selected virus prototypes or recognized representative strains of enveloped human viruses. All these viruses have a lipid membrane. The presence of a lipid membrane on viruses makes them especially vulnerable to lauric acid and its derivative monolaurin.

Our Organic Virgin Coconut Oil is a health food, natural cosmetic, superior cooking oil and potent herbal medicine all-in-one due to it containing the highest known source of medium chain fatty acids (MCFA's).

In the Malay language, the coconut tree, pokok kelapa, is also known as pokok seribu guna, "the tree of a thousand uses". In coastal India, the coconut tree itself is called kalpa vriksha, which translates as "the tree which provides all the necessities of life". In the worlds largest coconut producer, the Philippines, the coconut is commonly given the title "Tree of Life".

To understand the many health benefits of Virgin Coconut Oil one need only research the positive health effects of the main ingredients found within the oil, known as Medium Chain Fatty Acids (MCFA's). VCO is composed of more than 65% MCFA's. These fatty acids are so small that they are digested quickly and the body uses them as an immediate source of fuel rather than packing them away in storage inside our fat cells. MCFA’s are used to produce energy similar to carbohydrates and therefore are not circulated in the bloodstream like other fats (hence they do not increase the bad LDL cholesterol and lead to arterial deposits). For this reason, they do not become stored in fat cells or contribute to weight gain or arteriosclerosis. On the other hand, all the so-called heart healthy polyunsaturated oils we use for cooking are primarily composed of LCFA’s that require LDL cholesterol (the bad one) to move the fat through the bloodstream contributing to plaque build-up and fat storage. Furthermore, unlike MCFA’s that are highly resistant to oxidation, LCFA’s are rapidly altered by free radicals creating oxidized LDL cholesterol which is the main culprit in arterial disease. Only oxidized fats can end up as arterial plaque and the composition of 74% of this plaque comes from poly and mono unsaturated vegetable oils.

Today, Governments, Scientists, health insurance providers and Medical Doctors are placing increased emphasis on diet as being the single most important factor in health and disease prevention. This includes recommending patients to replace their regular cooking oils with Virgin Coconut Oil to reduce the build-up of oxidized cholesterol in the arteries and to maintain their immune health. In Malaysia, one of the pioneers in recommending VCO is Dr Eng Ji Ba, a practicing thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon who obtained his medical degree from the University of Cambridge, England (see his article here).

Those communities in countries consuming the highest amounts of coconut oil; in Polynesia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and the Philippines, not only have lower serum cholesterol but also lower obesity rates and lower coronary heart disease rates, in both prevalence and mortality.

As an Australian who has lived for the past 25 years in tropical Asia (Malaysia, India & Indonesia) I have seen first hand that those traditional Asian cultures that continue to use Virgin Coconut Oil and other Coconut products on a daily basis, enjoy excellent health and freedom from obesity and  many modern diseases. It is the norm in this part of the world that as diets change from traditional to modern / processed, then they unknowingly increase their likelihood of suffering from diseases that were seldom seem by their predecessors such as; heart disease, cancers, diabetes, inflammatory, nervous and metabolic disorders.

How do I take Virgin Coconut Oil?

Children 2 to 6 years old:  2 teaspoons every morning.

Children 7 to 12 years old: 4 teaspoons every morning.

Adults:  Take 2 to 4 tablespoons every morning as a supplement.

When first taking Virgin Coconut Oil start with 1 teaspoon with each meal. Some people experience loose motions for a few days (this may be a sign of intestinal fungal infection or candidiasis as it is being destroyed). For those with a sensitive taste or stomach it may be helpful to mix with juice, yoghurt or add to some food such as cooked oats.

Virgin Coconut Oil is both safe and recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Used in Cooking: Mix into salads and used as cooking oil, a healthy replacement for all processed vegetable cooking oil.
